It is hard to keep up with the pace of life these days and the demands on us from the commercialisation of Christmases and birthdays can drive us to distraction.
Manufacturers are bringing out new products much faster than we can afford to buy them and, thanks to their friends acquiring the latest gizmos, our children have a long list of desired products.
It may surprise some people to learn that it is not always the most expensive, high tech presents that our children are waiting for. Sometimes it is a traditional toy.
Here are the top ten products that children are going to be hoping for, according to the experts, in 2014.
1- Doll’s House. Doll’s houses have been the favorite for young girls for generations and they are set to remain firmly at the top of the list. Even for the older generation, doll’s houses and the vast range of furnishings and accessories are highly collectable.
2- Action figures. Young boys love to use their imaginations and, thanks to world events are very interested in army action figures. Though we may wish the subject were different, it is pleasing to see the boys engrossed in imaginative play.
3- Xbox One. Xbox One is the latest gaming machine to emerge from the Microsoft stables. It is introduced as an all round entertainment system that will mean a lot of the pre-existing equipment on the shelves below your TV can be discarded. It is the latest thing in technology and gives us a tiny glimpse towards military capability. If we can own this tech ourselves, what must they have?
4- Remote controlled aircraft. Model planes have been a favourite of children for decades. Now that the cost of technology has plummeted, sophisticated aircraft, such as the ones found at MyRCtopia are within reach for most families.
5- Playstation. Sony has recently introduced it’s showpiece Playstation 4. It stands on an equal footing with the Xbox One in every respect, so there is little to choose between them. Perhaps Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with the bad press that came when they disallowed game sharing on their consoles.
6- Game discs. Children will need the latest games to play on the consoles. The games are priced ideally for birthday presents from grandparents or Aunts.
7- Dress-up costumes. Little girls love to look like princesses and boys often choose soldier or astronaut suits. These suits encourage imaginative play.
8- Musical instrument. When our kids take up music at school, it is inevitable that they will request a particular instrument for a birthday. Whether it is a trumpet or violin one thing is for sure; they will hardly ever play it. Musical instruments, however, are set to hold onto the number eight spot this year.
9- Smartphone. There comes a time in every child’s life when they stop speaking to their parents. This happens the day they unpack the new smartphone. The kids need to keep up with their friends though, so go with it; you are not alone.
10- MP3 Player. The smartphone has mostly usurped the role of the mp3 player. They still have a use for younger children though, and will be requested for birthdays in their thousands.
So will your child receive a modern games console or an army suit for their birthday? I know which one mine would choose.
