If you’ve always wanted to start a collection of your own but haven’t been sure of what to collect, this post can help you. You can literally start a collection of anything in the world – it just depends on your own personal tastes and hobbies! The choice of what you can collect is massive, and you’re literally only limited by your imagination. You could collect coins, dolls, trains, stamps, hats, trading cards…to name a few things. Let’s take a look at how you can start your collection:
What are you Interested in?
Is there anything in the world that you feel fascinated by? If so, you could start there. Perhaps somebody you know is into collecting and you’d like to follow in their footsteps or vary what they’re doing. You could choose:
If you can think of more than one thing you’d be interested in, make a list of the items. If you can narrow your list down, then do that by crossing out items that seem less interesting to you than others. Once you’re down to the last 3 things, have a long hard think about what you’d like to collect. Many people continue their collections for years, so think very carefully!
Are there any limitations to your hobby, like space, cost, or availability? If you won’t be able to afford to buy a certain item, you should rule it out. If an item is unlikely to be available to you, you should rule that out too.
How will you get Your Hands on the Item?
Now you need to work out the clever part: how you’ll get your hands on the item or items. You’ll need to do some research to find out exactly how you’ll add these things to your collection, but then you can take the steps towards collecting it! The end result should feel very satisfying.
Keep it Original
When you’ve gotten used to collecting certain things, you can then make your collection unique. Here’s how to do it:
Create a running theme through your items. For example, you could collect animal print stamps, objects in only one colour, objects relating to a certain era in history, and so on.
Consider the quality of the items you’re collecting.
Consider collecting items having been owned by a famous person, infamous person, or strange person.
The more unique, well displayed, and interesting your collection gets, the more valuable it will be. The way you present your collection and tell a story with it increases it’s worth as a whole. Make sure you keep an eye out for local events where you may be able to display your collection to others, too. Also, make sure you take your time when building your collection – you need to have patience to build something worth looking at. You should also consider taking out insurance if your collection becomes very valuable.
