The national lottery is something that many households take part in today. However, it wasn’t something that was just ‘always there’. The lottery first came about in the year 1994, when the first lottery draw took place. Noel Edmonds, host of Deal or No Deal, presented the draw.
People who took place in the lottery that first time were excited to be given the chance of winning up to £7 million. Tickets were only £1 and there was a 1 in 14 million chance of winning the big time.
Money made by the lottery operator, Camelot, was intended to go towards arts, charities, and the like. It took just 12 hours for 7 million tickets to sell. As it turned out, £800,000 was won by 7 winners that first show. £154 million of the money made went to charity! It wasn’t long before further lottery games and scratchcards were introduced to try to up the sales.
Since it’s inception in 1994, the lottery has created 3,600 millionaires. It’s paid out a massive £53 billion! That’s just the UK lottery. The Irish lotto has some pretty interesting stats too. In fact, the Irish lotto gives people a higher chance of winning, along with more money.
What do lottery winners buy? The average lottery winner will buy at least 4 cars, either for themselves or the people they love. Incredibly, 10% of lottery winners will buy more than 10 cars!
A couple of crazy lottery purchases include a firework factory, and a neighbor’s house which was later transformed into a boozer. Some lottery winners like to buy tarantulas. Many of them have admitted to buying drugs and booze.

A man named Wayne Elliot, from Kent, won a prize every single week for the first 26 draws of the lottery. Unbelievable! Although the odds are 350 billion to 1, a family in Tipton won the lottery 3 times – totally over £3 million!
The largest unclaimed prize is close to £64 billion. It’s a world record, and was bought by somebody in the Hitchen area.
Incredibly, 99% of people still play the lottery after they win. 70% of them are convinced that they’re going to hit the big time again.
The lottery number that has been drawn the least is 13.
